Here we report on hymns and songs that express New Covenant truth. So many hymns and songs are weak if not sickly from the perspective of our New Covenant relationship with our God. Look here for hymns and songs the lyrics of which reflect the truth of the Gospel of the Kingdom.
Why this matters: The greatest and foremost commandment, as stated through Moses in Deuteronomy 6 4:7 and Jesus in Matthew 22:34-37, is to love our God with all of our being. From Matthew – “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. …” How exclusive of other loves is our love for our God to be? Hear Jesus as recorded in Luke 14: 25-27 “Now large crowds were traveling with him, and he turned and said to them, “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. ” Hate is not the lesson Jesus is teaching here; rather, by over-expression He is clarifying the fact that our love for our God must eclipse the love we have for any other person or thing. Including our own self-life. Yet in our human selfishness and weakness, we are incapable of this great commandment love. Fear not, for the love we must have for our God is the very love He intends to pour out into us by His indwelling Spirit in us! See Romans 5:3-5. “And not only that, but we[d] also boast in our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. “
It is for this God-sourced and Spirit-driven love this song prays. That is why this song matters.
More Love to Thee, O Christ
More love to Thee, O Christ, more love to Thee! Hear Thou the prayer I make on bended knee. This is my earnest plea: more love, O Christ, to Thee; more love to Thee, more love to Thee!
Once earthly joy I craved, sought peace and rest; now Thee alone I seek, give what is best.
This all my prayer shall be: more love, O Christ, to Thee; more love to Thee, more love to Thee!
Let sorrow do its work, come grief or pain; sweet are Thy messengers, sweet their refrain,
When they can sing with me: more love, O Christ, to Thee; more love to Thee, more love to Thee!
Then shall my final breath whisper Thy praise; this be the parting cry my heart shall raise;
Now for eternity, more love, O Christ, to Thee; more love to Thee, more love to Thee!
