Jackson – A Most Unusual Dog.
The pictures with this post is of Jackson, who was truly a most unusual dog. A pound rescue from 2015 (one of a pair of dogs I adopted that year), Jackson went on to be locally famous for his uncanny ability to find people who needed, well, and empathetic dog.
He and his partner, Abby, were abandoned by their previous owners and left to fend or die. A farmer kept an eye on them for a few days, and then coaxed them into his truck and brought the to the shelter. The two dogs were down to the classic skin and bones look (a.k.a “heroin chic”), and were enjoying the shelter’s efforts to get some meat back on those bones.
Jackson and Abby were closely bonded. I was told that there was a line of people wanting to adopt Jackson, but the shelter director wanted the two dogs to go to a new home together. I guess for most, that was a “poison pill” included in the adoption. The idea seemed reasonable to me. I took them both.
Abby, quite a bit older than Jackson, developed liver disease in her second year at my house, and had to be put down. Jackson was in a funk over that for about three weeks after her passing. Me, too.
Jackson and I bonded more closely through that passage, and it was not long before his unique and uncanny social skills began to come out in him.
Friday (today) is the one-year anniversary of Jackson’s passing due to a malignant melanoma tumor. Over the next few months I will be posting pictures and stories of this most unusual dog. Stay tuned!
