It is to Our Advantage (Part 2)

John 16:8-15 “And He [the Holy Spirit}, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment: regarding sin, because they do not believe in Me; and regarding righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you no longer are going to see Me; and regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.  I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.”

In the previous post on this passage, we explored the advantage we now have by the indwelling Holy Spirit of Christ, something greater than what the disciples experienced in the physical presence of Christ. Now we can explore why this is to our advantage.

The indwelling Spirit provides the conduit for all that our God intends to live and do in us. “And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment: regarding sin, because they do not believe in Me; and regarding righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you no longer are going to see Me; and regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.” By the indwelling Holy Spirit the world will experience the conviction of our God regarding sin, righteousness, and judgment. This is to our advantage when by the Spirit we speak truth to someone. We may speak, but it will be the Holy Spirit who convicts and convinces. That part is not up to us, nor can we convict someone with our own efforts apart from manipulation. He leads us, we speak as He leads, He convicts. Only in such obedience is the power of our God manifested in our conversation.

I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.” The indwelling Holy Spirit will speak to us, guiding us into truth. He will guide us by the scriptures, of course. The Spirit will also speak to us of what He hears from the Father, even disclosing to us what is to come. It is to our advantage to listen to the Holy Spirit, for our God intends to speak guidance and truth to us through Him.

He will glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.”  All that the Father has for us He has given to the Son. All that the Son has for us is delivered to us by the Holy Spirit. As we learn to walk in the Spirit and receive what He speaks and reveals, the glory will flow back to the Son. It is to our advantage to develop the daily habit of seeking the guidance of the Spirit and listen for when He speaks.

John 15:26When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, He will testify about Me….” One of the foundational evidences of a true disciple is an abiding in Christ by His Holy Spirit that is ongoing and interactive. It is to our advantage to realize that our God intends a true, intimate, loving relationship of two-way communication. He has demonstrated this in the Old and new Testaments, and provided all we need to live in it. And He has required it of all true disciples. After all, there can be no intimate, loving, abiding relationship without such communion and conversation.

  1. This is beautiful and full of truth and wisdom. I’m listening with more clarity; less clutter. I devote more time in the WORD. I begin my day with quiet meditation and study in the Word. Through this time with my Savior I can discern the messages from the Holy Spirit. Thank you for being a witness and messenger for the Good News we all need! May we gain more wisdom daily. 🙏🏻

    1. Thank you as well for the encouraging words, woman of faith and flannel. If we could only grasp just how dear a friend we have in our Savior. How dearly we would love him above all else if we were to give Him all we are and all we have.
